On 7 September, hundreds of workers and leaders were arrested outside Lahore Railway Station before the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal train march could begin. Malik Muhammad Ashraf and Azhar Iqbal Hasan managed to board the train and addressed the public at every station. On reaching Multan, they were detained by police and sent back to Lahore by the night train.

National and provincial elections were held on 10 October. The Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal won 60 National Assembly seats and 100 provincial assembly seats.
