Jamaat-e-Islami Demands Abolition of Petroleum Levy to Curb Inflation
Jamaat-e-Islami continues its nationwide movement to reduce petrol prices and eliminate the petroleum levy to provide relief to the public.
Jamaat-e-Islami has intensified its nationwide campaign to combat skyrocketing inflation, specifically demanding the immediate abolition of the petroleum levy and other unjustified taxes. The party asserts that the current pricing of petrol, electricity, and gas has made life miserable for the common man, necessitating a decisive state response to provide genuine economic relief to the citizens of Pakistan.
Campaign Against Unjust Petroleum Levies
The party is leading a robust movement across the country, characterized by daily rallies and protests. A significant sit-in in Hyderabad has already crossed thirty-nine days, demonstrating the sustained commitment of the party and the public. To further amplify this cause, Jamaat-e-Islami has launched a signature campaign with a target of reaching twenty million citizens, which will culminate in a powerful march toward Islamabad.
The party leadership maintains that the petroleum levy, along with the Climate Support Levy and customs duties, constitutes an unfair burden on the public. They argue that these charges are not linked to global market fluctuations and are instead used to cover government inefficiencies and extravagant spending. The party demands that the government stop using the global market as a pretext to collect excessive funds from the pockets of ordinary citizens.
Addressing Economic Mismanagement and Banking Interests
Jamaat-e-Islami has raised serious concerns regarding the government's relationship with the IMF and the banking sector. The party alleges that the government is prioritizing the profits of the banking mafia and Independent Power Producers (IPPs) over the welfare of the people. They point out that while the public suffers from inflation, banking incomes continue to rise through mechanisms that the party describes as illegal.
The party also highlighted the inefficiency of the power sector, noting that Pakistan has a massive capacity of 40,000 megawatts while actual consumption is significantly lower. Despite this, the government continues to import expensive fuel and pay capacity charges to IPPs, which eventually increases the electricity bills for consumers through fuel adjustment charges. Jamaat-e-Islami calls for a shift toward sustainable energy and a reduction in fuel imports to stabilize the economy.
Call for National Stability and Dialogue
Beyond economic issues, Jamaat-e-Islami has expressed deep concern over the lack of government responsiveness regarding the rescue of Pakistani hostages in Somalia, condemning the negligence that led to the loss of lives. The party also strongly rejects any proposals for governor's rule or the imposition of a national emergency, stating that such measures only alienate the public and destabilize the state's integrity.
In a gesture of national goodwill, the party has urged the government to engage in meaningful and purposeful negotiations with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) to resolve political tensions. Jamaat-e-Islami has offered to play a mediating role to ensure that the country avoids further instability. The party reaffirms its support for the right to peaceful, democratic, and constitutional protest for all political entities, provided they remain within the bounds of the law.
