Hafiz Naeem Calls for Review of Expensive Power Agreements

Jamaat-e-Islami Chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has called for a complete review of expensive power agreements, saying that the electricity crisis cannot be solved unless unfair capacity payments, high tariffs, and weak accountability in the power sector are addressed.

Speaking on the growing burden of electricity bills, Hafiz Naeem said that ordinary citizens, shopkeepers, industries, and small businesses are being forced to pay for a broken energy system. He said electricity has become unaffordable for families and uncompetitive for industry, creating pressure on both households and the national economy.

Call for Power Sector Reform

Hafiz Naeemur Rehman said that the government must take serious steps to reform the power sector instead of repeatedly increasing tariffs. He said the current system benefits a few powerful groups while millions of citizens suffer from high bills, taxes, and surcharges.

Power agreements should be reviewed in the public interest.
Unfair capacity payments must be reduced or eliminated.
Electricity tariffs should be made affordable for households and industry.
The power sector must be made transparent, accountable, and people-centered.

Relief for Households and Businesses

The JI chief said that high electricity bills have become one of the biggest problems for ordinary families. He said many households are forced to reduce basic expenses because of rising utility costs, while small businesses and industries struggle to remain operational.

Domestic consumers should receive direct relief in electricity bills.
Small traders and shopkeepers need affordable power to keep businesses running.
Industrial consumers require competitive tariffs to protect production and jobs.
Energy policy should support economic growth rather than weaken it.

Accountability and Transparency

Hafiz Naeem said that the public has the right to know why electricity remains expensive despite repeated claims of reforms. He demanded transparency in power contracts, billing mechanisms, taxes, and the role of institutions responsible for energy management.

He said that without accountability, the burden will continue to fall on citizens who are already struggling with inflation, unemployment, and reduced purchasing power.

People-Centered Energy Policy

The Jamaat-e-Islami chief said that energy policy must be designed around the needs of the people and the economy. He said affordable electricity is essential for education, healthcare, household stability, business growth, and industrial progress.

Electricity pricing should be fair and understandable for consumers.
Taxes and surcharges on electricity bills should be reduced.
Public money should not be used to protect inefficient arrangements.
Long-term reforms should focus on affordability, transparency, and sustainability.
