Rached Ghannouchi

Biography & Religio-Political Contribution: Rached Ghannouchi is the intellectual architect and leader of Tunisia’s Ennahda movement. Returning from exile after the Arab Spring, he navigated the treacherous political landscape of post-revolution Tunisia, advocating for a constitutional framework compatible with Islamic principles while resisting radical secularism and dictatorship. 

Impact on the Ummah: Ghannouchi effectively countered the Western narrative that Islam is incompatible with democratic governance. He provided a modern template for Islamic movements to operate within complex, pluralistic societies without shedding their core Islamic identity, thereby protecting the religious character of North Africa.
