Gulbuddin Hekmatyar

Biography & Religio-Political Contribution: Gulbuddin Hekmatyar is the founder and leader of Hezb-e-Islami Afghanistan. A prominent figure of the Afghan Jihad against the Soviet Union and later the US-led occupation, he sought to establish a sovereign Islamic state in Afghanistan. He pioneered an ideologically driven Islamic resistance distinct from traditional tribal factions. 

Impact on the Ummah: Hekmatyar shattered the myth of superpower invincibility through strategic military resistance and ideological steadfastness. He proved to the Ummah that a well-organized, Islamic movement could intellectually and physically defeat Western and communist materialist expansions. 

Connection with Jamaat-e-Islami: Hezb-e-Islami and Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan shared an intertwined relationship during the Afghan Jihad. Maulana Maududi’s literature formed the ideological bedrock of Hekmatyar’s cadres. Former JI Amirs, especially Qazi Hussain Ahmad, worked closely with him to coordinate support. JI Pakistan regards Hekmatyar as a crucial veteran of the modern Islamic revival who protected the western frontiers of the Ummah from secular subversion. 

Urdu Publications: His political discourses and books on Islamic governance have been translated into Urdu, prominently including Islam Aur Riyasat (Islam and the State).
